Vijayanagar Empire
   Founded by Harihara and Bukka who claimed to be the descendents of Yadava rulers of Deogir. They were originally in the service of the Kakatiya ruler of Warangal, Rudradeva, and were carried to Delhi as prisoners along with him in 1324. On being released from captivity in 1336, they established a new state with its capital at Vijayanagar, the newly built city on the southern bank of the Tungbhadra River. This new state became fa-mous as the Vijayanagar Empire. It was constantly at war with the Bahmani kingdom and successors, but was dismantled after its de-feat in the battle of Talicota (1565). The most illustrious ruler of Vi-jayanagar was Krishna Deva Raya (1509-1529). The impress of contacts with the Bahmanis and the Delhi sultanate on Vijayanagar's political culture was manifested by the title "Sultan among Hindu kings" used for the ruler and also by the presence of a large contin-gent of Muslim horsemen in his army.
